Car Loan EMI Calculator

Monthly EMI and interest on a new car loan for 1 to 7 years

Loans and EMINew car loans1 to 7 yearsChecked 2 Nov 2026

This car loan EMI calculator gives the car EMI, the interest cost and the yearly balance for a new car loan. Type the amount you plan to borrow after your down payment, the rate the dealer or bank quotes, and a tenure from 1 to 7 years.

It opens with ₹8 lakh at 9% for 5 years, a common setup for a mid size hatchback or compact sedan. Change any figure and the car EMI updates at once.

At a glance

  • Example loan₹8 lakh at 9% for 5 years
  • EMI₹16,607 a month
  • Total interest₹1,96,401
  • Tenure1 to 7 years for most new cars
  • FundingOften up to 80% to 100% of the on road or ex showroom price
  • Rate typeUsually fixed for car loans

How to use the car loan EMI calculator

  1. Work out the loan amount: the on road price minus your down payment and any exchange value for your old car.
  2. Type the car loan interest rate from the quote. Ask whether it is fixed or floating, and whether it is a reducing rate.
  3. Pick the tenure in years.
  4. Put in the fee percentage if the lender charges one.

The car loan calculator then shows the EMI, the interest you will pay over the loan and a table of the amount still owed year after year. That balance is handy if you plan to sell or upgrade the car before the loan ends.

Tenure: 3, 5 or 7 years

₹8 lakh at 9%EMITotal interest
3 years₹25,440₹1,15,832
5 years₹16,607₹1,96,401
7 years₹12,871₹2,81,186

A 7 year loan cuts the EMI by about ₹3,700 compared with 5 years but adds about ₹85,000 of interest. There is a second cost: a car loses value fastest in its first few years, so on a long loan you can owe more than the car is worth for a while. If you sell or the car is written off, the loan still has to be cleared.

Down payment and the real price of the car

A bigger down payment is the simplest way to cut both EMI and interest. On a car with a ₹10 lakh on road price, paying 20% down leaves an ₹8 lakh loan as above. Paying 30% down leaves ₹7 lakh, which drops the 5 year EMI at 9% to about ₹14,531.

Remember that the on road price includes road tax, registration and insurance on top of the ex showroom price. Some lenders fund only the ex showroom part. The down payment calculator compares 10% to 40% down in one table.

Car loan interest: what to check in the quote

  • Flat or reducing rate: some dealer finance quotes use a flat rate, which looks lower but costs much more. Turn it into a true rate on the flat vs reducing page.
  • Fixed or floating: most car loans are fixed. A fixed loan may carry a foreclosure charge if you repay early.
  • Processing and documentation fees, plus 18% GST.
  • Bundled add ons: extended warranty or insurance added to the loan amount raise your EMI and interest.
  • Foreclosure terms: ask how much it costs to close the loan after 1 or 2 years. Work it out on the loan foreclosure calculator.

Car EMI and your monthly budget

A common rule of thumb is to keep the car EMI under 10 to 15% of take home pay, and all EMIs together under 40 to 50%. Running costs come on top: fuel or charging, insurance renewal, service and parking. If the EMI only fits by stretching the tenure to 7 years, a less costly car or a used car loan may be the safer choice.

For a two wheeler, use the bike EMI calculator. For a goods vehicle or taxi, use the commercial vehicle loan EMI calculator.

Electric cars and car loan EMI

Some lenders offer slightly lower rates or longer tenures for electric cars. The EMI math is the same; only the inputs change. When you compare an electric car loan with a petrol or CNG one, add the monthly running cost to each EMI. A higher EMI with lower charging costs can come out close to a cheaper car with higher fuel bills over 5 years. Ask the lender if any green loan offer has conditions such as a minimum tenure.

Frequently asked questions

What is the EMI on an ₹8 lakh car loan?

At 9% it is ₹16,607 a month for 5 years, ₹25,440 for 3 years and ₹12,871 for 7 years. Use the car EMI calculator above with your own rate.

Is 7 years too long for a car loan?

It lowers the EMI but costs much more interest, and the car may be worth less than the loan for several years. Most people are better off with 5 years or less.

Can I prepay a car loan?

Usually yes, but fixed rate car loans often have a foreclosure or part payment charge, commonly a few percent of the amount plus GST. Check your loan agreement.

Does a car loan include insurance and registration?

Some lenders fund the full on road price, others only the ex showroom price. Anything added to the loan raises your EMI and interest.

Is car loan interest a flat or reducing rate?

Bank car loans are usually quoted on a reducing balance. Some dealer schemes quote a flat rate. A flat rate of 6% to 7% can equal a reducing rate of 11% to 13%.

Which is cheaper, a car loan or a personal loan for a car?

A car loan is secured by the car, so it usually has a lower rate than a personal loan. Compare the total interest in both calculators.
