Interest Rate Calculator: Find the Real Rate

Finds the yearly rate from what you put in, what you got and how long

InterestCompound rateSimple rateChecked 2 Nov 2026

This interest rate calculator works backwards. Instead of giving you the interest, it finds the yearly rate hiding inside an offer when you only know the starting amount, the final amount and the time. Agents, schemes and relatives often describe returns as “your money becomes ₹1.5 lakh in 5 years”; this tool turns that into a percentage you can compare.

It shows two answers: the compound rate, which is the fair way to compare with bank deposits, and the simple rate, which is how the offer is often presented.

At a glance

  • Compound raten × ((A ÷ P)^(1 ÷ (n × t)) − 1)
  • Simple rate(A − P) ÷ (P × t) × 100
  • Example₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh in 5 years
  • Compound answer8.45% a year
  • Simple answer10% a year
  • Use it forPolicies, chit funds, private loans, any “becomes” promise

How the interest rate calculator works

Type three figures: the amount you put in, the amount you got back (or were promised) and the years. Choose the compounding to compare with. The calculator solves the compound interest formula for r:

r = n × ((A ÷ P)^(1 ÷ (n × t)) − 1)

Take ₹1,00,000 that becomes ₹1,50,000 in 5 years. With yearly compounding: (1.5)^(1/5) = 1.0845, so the rate is 8.45% a year. The same growth looks like 10% a year when worked out as simple interest, because 50% over 5 years is 10% per year on the starting amount. The higher simple figure is the one sellers like to quote.

Worked examples of the rate of interest calculator

Put inGot backYearsCompound rateSimple rate
₹1,00,000₹1,50,00058.45%10%
₹1,00,000₹2,00,000612.25%16.67%
₹50,000₹65,00038.84% (quarterly)10%

The gap grows with time. A “money doubles in 6 years” claim sounds like 16.67% a year in simple terms, but it is really 12.25% compounded. Compare that with what a bank FD or the PPF pays to judge the offer.

Interest percentage calculator for monthly payments

When a plan takes monthly payments and pays a lump sum at the end, the start and end amounts are not enough, because the money goes in over time. For that case, use the XIRR mode of the SIP CAGR and XIRR calculator: type the monthly amount, the number of months and the final value, and it finds the yearly rate.

For a loan where you know the EMI but not the rate, a quick check is to try rates in the EMI calculator until the EMI matches. For a flat rate quote, the flat vs reducing page converts it directly.

Annual, monthly and effective rates

  • Annual (nominal) rate: the quoted yearly figure, such as 12%.
  • Monthly rate: the yearly rate ÷ 12, so 1% a month.
  • Effective annual rate: what you really earn or pay once compounding is counted. 12% compounded monthly is 12.68% effective.

When two offers compound differently, compare effective rates. The compounding menu in the interest rate calculator in months, quarters or years lets you see this. A loan's all in yearly cost, the APR, has to appear in the key fact statement.

Using the result to judge an offer

  1. Find the compound rate with this tool.
  2. Compare it with a safe benchmark: a bank FD or a post office deposit for the same period, from the FD calculator.
  3. Ask what extra risk you take for any extra return. A promised rate far above deposits usually carries real risk.
  4. Check taxes and charges, which can cut the real rate a lot.

Schemes promising very high fixed returns, especially through informal collection agents, are a common source of fraud. Check that the company is registered with RBI or SEBI before you pay anything.

Bank interest rates calculator: reading a rate card

Banks publish rate cards with different rates for each tenure bucket and for senior citizens. Some also show an annualised yield, which is higher than the rate because of quarterly compounding. A 7% rate compounded quarterly yields 7.19% a year. If you have a deposit receipt showing the deposit and maturity amounts, this calculator recovers the rate the bank actually used, which is a handy check.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the rate of interest from principal and amount?

For compound interest, rate = (amount ÷ principal)^(1 ÷ years) − 1, times 100. ₹1 lakh becoming ₹1.5 lakh in 5 years is 8.45% a year.

What is the simple interest rate formula?

Rate = interest × 100 ÷ (principal × years). ₹50,000 of interest on ₹1 lakh over 5 years is 10% a year simple.

If money doubles in 6 years, what is the interest rate?

About 12.25% a year compounded yearly, or 16.67% in simple terms.

What is 1% per month as a yearly rate?

12% a year as a simple rate, or 12.68% a year once monthly compounding is counted.

Why is the compound rate lower than the simple rate for the same growth?

Because compounding does part of the work. Less rate is needed when interest earns interest along the way.

Can I find the interest rate of a loan from the EMI?

Yes, by trying rates in the EMI calculator until the EMI matches, or by asking the lender for the annual percentage rate.
