SCSS is offered at post offices and many banks with the same rules everywhere. Few government backed options pay more to people over 60, and the money lands in your savings account four times a year.

How the SCSS calculator works

SCSS pays simple interest every quarter, on the first working day of April, July, October and January. Quarterly interest = deposit × rate ÷ 4. The deposit itself stays the same and is returned after 5 years.

₹15,00,000 at 8.2% pays ₹30,750 a quarter, which averages ₹10,250 a month. Over 5 years that is ₹6,15,000 of interest. At the ₹30 lakh maximum the quarterly payment is ₹61,500. The senior citizen savings scheme interest calculator above uses the rate your account was opened with, which stays fixed for the term.

Extension, early closure and TDS

  • Early closure: allowed with a deduction from the deposit, larger in the first two years. Closing before 1 year means interest already paid is recovered.
  • TDS: cut once yearly SCSS interest passes the senior citizen limit; seniors with income below the taxable level can file a declaration to avoid it.
  • Nomination: add a nominee when opening.

The scheme rules are published by India Post.

Building a retirement income with SCSS

SCSS works well as the base of a retirement income because it is government backed and pays on fixed dates. Many retirees combine it with:

Remember that the quarterly amount does not rise with inflation. Keep some money in options that can grow over a 20 to 30 year retirement.

SCSS vs bank FDs for senior citizens

Seniors usually get a small bonus on bank FD rates, and a few banks come near the SCSS figure. The differences that matter: SCSS is government backed and pays quarterly at a rate fixed for 5 years, while a bank FD has DICGC cover per bank and many tenure and payout choices. SCSS has a ₹30 lakh cap per person, so larger sums need other homes. Run both through the FD calculator and this tool before deciding, and spread money across a few options rather than one.
