EPF Calculator: PF Balance and Interest

EPF balance at 58 from your pay, contributions and the EPF rate

RetirementPF interestEPS splitChecked 2 Nov 2026

This EPF calculator estimates how much your Employees' Provident Fund account could hold when you retire at 58. Enter monthly basic plus dearness allowance, age, existing PF balance, an expected yearly raise and the EPF interest rate. It splits each month's contribution between your EPF, your employer's EPF share and the pension scheme, and adds interest the way EPFO does.

The current rate, 8.25% a year, is filled in. EPFO declares the rate once a year, so you can change it to test other figures.

How the EPF calculator works

Each month:

  • you put in 12% of basic pay plus DA;
  • your employer puts in 12%, but 8.33% of wages up to ₹15,000, that is up to ₹1,250, goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), and only the rest goes to your EPF;
  • interest is worked out on the running monthly balance at the yearly rate ÷ 12 and added to the account at the end of the year.

On ₹30,000 basic plus DA, you contribute ₹3,600, your employer's EPF share is ₹2,351 and ₹1,250 goes to EPS. Starting at 28 with no balance, 5% yearly raises and 8.25%, the pf interest calculator estimates about ₹1.61 crore at 58. Pay rises matter a lot here: with no raises the figure would be far lower.

EPF interest calculation in detail

Every month EPFO applies a twelfth of the annual rate to the prior month's closing balance, then posts the year's total in one credit. Contributions made during a month earn interest from the next month. The rate is declared by the Central Board of Trustees and confirmed by the government for each financial year.

Basic plus DAYour 12%Employer to EPFEmployer to EPS
₹15,000₹1,800₹551₹1,250
₹30,000₹3,600₹2,351₹1,250
₹50,000₹6,000₹4,751₹1,250

Some employers contribute on the full salary to EPS only if both employer and employee opted for higher pension. This calculator uses the standard ₹15,000 wage ceiling.

Voluntary PF and tax on EPF interest

You can contribute more than 12% through Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF), which earns the same rate. Your employer does not match it. Note the tax rule: interest on employee contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year (₹5 lakh where there is no employer contribution) is taxable. EPF withdrawals after 5 years of continuous service are tax free; earlier withdrawals can be taxed. Since tax law has been rewritten, get the latest treatment confirmed by a tax professional.

Withdrawals and job changes

  • Job change: transfer your PF to the new employer's account using your UAN rather than withdrawing, so the balance keeps compounding and service stays continuous.
  • Partial withdrawals: allowed for reasons such as a house, illness, education and marriage, with conditions.
  • Final settlement: at retirement, or after a period of unemployment as allowed by EPFO rules.

Each early withdrawal lowers the final balance a lot because it removes years of compounding. Rules and forms are on the EPFO website.

EPF in your retirement plan

For most salaried people EPF is the largest retirement asset. Gratuity and, for some, NPS add to it. Estimate them with the gratuity calculator and the NPS calculator. If you want a tax free option you control yourself, the PPF calculator shows how yearly deposits grow. Remember that a crore in 30 years will buy much less than a crore today; the inflation adjusted SIP calculator shows how to think in today's money.

This compound interest calculator for PF uses a steady rate and steady raises. Actual rates are declared yearly and pay rarely rises evenly. Read the output as a projection. Your EPFO passbook shows the real balance.
