Mobile EMI Calculator

Monthly instalment on a phone bought on EMI, in months

Loans and EMIPhone on EMIIn monthsChecked 2 Nov 2026

This mobile EMI calculator shows what a phone bought on instalments really costs each month and in total. Type the amount you are financing, the yearly rate the lender or card charges and the tenure. For 6 months type 0.5; for 9 months, 0.75. Out comes the monthly figure, the interest and the fee in rupees.

Phone EMIs are short, so the interest in rupees looks small. But card and consumer finance rates are high, and fees can double the cost on a 3 or 6 month plan. Run the numbers before you tap buy.

How the mobile EMI calculator works

Phone EMIs follow the same reducing balance method as other loans. Each month the lender charges interest on what is left, and your EMI covers that plus a slice of the price. Financing ₹40,000 for a year at 15% means ₹3,610 a month and ₹3,324 of interest. Cut the tenure to 6 months and the EMI rises to ₹6,961, but interest drops to ₹1,768.

If you pay part of the price up front, type only the financed amount. The phone emi calculator then shows the EMI on that part alone.

Three ways to buy a phone on EMI

RouteHow it worksWatch for
Credit card EMIThe bank converts the purchase into monthly instalmentsInterest rate, processing fee, GST on interest, effect on card limit
Consumer durable loanA finance company pays the store, you repay monthlyDown payment, fees, auto debit charges
No cost EMI offerThe seller discounts the price by the interestGST on interest and fees still apply

For card based plans, see the credit card EMI calculator. Zero interest deals are unpacked on the no cost EMI page.

Mobile EMI calculator in months: which tenure

Shorter tenures cost less interest. Most people pick the longest option to get the lowest EMI, but a phone is often replaced in 2 to 3 years. Paying for it over 24 months means you may still be paying when you want a new one.

  • 3 to 6 months: lowest interest, but fixed fees weigh more heavily.
  • 9 to 12 months: a balance for most budgets.
  • 18 to 24 months: lowest EMI, highest total cost.

A simple rule: if the EMI only fits your budget at 24 months, the phone may be more than you can comfortably afford right now.

Hidden costs on phone EMIs

  • Processing fee: often a fixed amount of a few hundred rupees plus GST. On a 3 month plan this can be more than the interest.
  • GST on interest: banks charge 18% GST on the interest part of card EMIs.
  • Foreclosure charge: closing a card EMI early may carry a fee.
  • Insurance or extended warranty added to the financed amount.
  • Late payment: a missed EMI on a card also brings late fees and can affect your credit score.

Add these to the interest from the emi calculator for mobile phone purchases to see the true extra cost.

Down payment on a phone

Consumer finance plans usually ask for a down payment, sometimes a few thousand rupees, sometimes 20% or more. A larger down payment lowers the EMI and the interest. For a ₹60,000 phone with ₹12,000 down, you finance ₹48,000. Several up front amounts are compared on the down payment page.

Is EMI right for a phone

EMI can make sense when the phone is a work tool, when a genuine no cost offer is available, or when you would otherwise empty your emergency savings. It makes less sense for an upgrade you could wait a few months for and buy outright. The cheapest option is to save the EMI amount for a few months first; the RD calculator shows how a small monthly saving builds up. Bigger purchases on credit are covered under the EMI calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the instalment on a ₹40,000 handset?

At 15% a year, ₹3,610 a month for 12 months or ₹6,961 for 6 months, before fees and GST on interest.

How do I enter months in the mobile EMI calculator?

Type the months divided by 12. Six months is 0.5, nine months is 0.75 and eighteen months is 1.5.

Is a phone EMI cheaper on a credit card or a consumer loan?

It depends on the rate and fees. Compare the total you will pay, including processing fees and GST on interest, for both.

Does buying a phone on EMI affect my credit score?

Paying every EMI on time can help your record. Missing one hurts it, and card EMIs also use up part of your card limit.

Can I close a phone EMI early?

Usually yes, but some lenders charge a foreclosure fee. Check before you pay off early.

Is no cost EMI really free?

The interest is offset by a discount, but you usually still pay GST on the interest and a processing fee.
