Flat vs Reducing Interest Rate Calculator

Turns a flat interest rate into its true reducing rate and EMI

Loans and EMIFlat rateReducing rateChecked 2 Nov 2026

Flat vs reducing is the most common trap in loan quotes: a flat rate looks much lower than a reducing rate, but usually costs far more. This calculator takes a flat rate offer and shows its EMI, the reducing rate that gives the same EMI and the extra interest you would pay compared with a true reducing rate loan.

Type the loan amount, the flat rate you were quoted and the tenure. Take 10% flat over 3 years: in reducing terms it is nearly 17.9%.

At a glance

  • Flat rateInterest on the full loan for the full tenure
  • Reducing rateInterest only on the balance still owed each month
  • Flat EMI formula(P + P × rate × years) ÷ months
  • Example₹3 lakh, 10% flat, 3 years: EMI ₹10,833
  • Real reducing rate17.92%
  • Rough ruleReducing rate is about 1.7 to 1.9 times the flat rate

Flat vs reducing: how each is calculated

Flat rate: interest = loan × rate × years, worked out once on the starting amount. The EMI is (loan + that interest) ÷ months. Even in the last month, when you owe almost nothing, you are still paying interest as if you owed the whole loan.

Reducing rate: interest each month applies just to the unpaid principal. The EMI follows the standard formula on the EMI calculator. As the balance falls, so does the interest part of each EMI.

₹3,00,000 at 10% flat for 3 years: interest = 3,00,000 × 10% × 3 = ₹90,000, EMI = 3,90,000 ÷ 36 = ₹10,833. At 10% reducing, the EMI is ₹9,680 and the interest is about ₹48,500. The flat loan costs ₹41,514 more.

₹3,00,00010%3 years₹10,83317.92%
₹5,00,0008%5 years₹11,66714.13%

The longer the tenure, the bigger the gap, because the flat method keeps charging on money you have already repaid. The flat interest rate calculator above finds the equal reducing rate for any combination.

Where flat rates show up

  • Dealer finance for two wheelers, used cars and consumer goods.
  • Some personal loans from small finance companies and microfinance.
  • Loans from cooperative societies and chit style lending.
  • Commercial vehicle and tractor loans in some markets.

Bank loans for homes, cars and personal needs are normally quoted on a reducing balance. If a quote only says “rate” without saying which, ask in writing. Lenders regulated by RBI must disclose an annual percentage rate, the APR, in the key fact statement, which includes fees and works like a reducing rate. Compare APRs between offers.

Reducing EMI calculator: why the EMI is lower

Under a reducing rate, each EMI pays the interest due on the current balance and the rest goes to principal. Early EMIs are mostly interest; later ones are mostly principal. Because the balance keeps falling, total interest is much lower than under a flat rate at the same headline number.

Every month's split between interest and principal is listed by the loan amortization calculator. Staff loans that collect plain interest after the principal is cleared have their own tool, the simple interest EMI calculator.

How to compare a flat and a reducing offer

  1. Type the flat offer into this calculator and note the equal reducing rate.
  2. Compare that number with the other lender's reducing rate.
  3. Add processing fees and insurance to both.
  4. Pick the offer with the lower total amount payable.

Example: a two wheeler dealer offers 7% flat for 2 years on ₹1 lakh; a bank offers 12% reducing. The flat EMI is ₹4,750; the bank EMI is ₹4,707. The bank loan is slightly cheaper even though its headline rate looks much higher. Run your own numbers in the bike EMI calculator and the car loan EMI calculator.

Prepaying a flat rate loan

With a flat rate, interest for the full tenure is fixed at the start. Some lenders still charge most of that interest if you close early, so prepaying saves much less than on a reducing loan. Ask for a foreclosure statement in writing before you pay. On a reducing rate loan, prepaying cuts interest straight away; see the prepayment calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between flat and reducing interest rate?

Flat means interest is fixed on the starting amount for every month of the loan. Reducing means each month's interest follows what is left to repay, so at the same headline number it is far cheaper.

How do I convert a flat rate to a reducing rate?

Find the reducing rate that gives the same EMI. The calculator does this. As a rough rule, multiply the flat rate by 1.7 to 1.9 for tenures of 2 to 5 years.

Is 10% flat rate high?

For a 3 year loan it equals about 17.9% on a reducing basis, which is higher than most bank personal loans.

Do banks use flat or reducing rates?

Banks normally quote reducing rates for home, car and personal loans. Flat rates are more common in dealer finance and some small lenders.

What is the reducing rate of 7% flat for 2 years?

About 12.9% on a reducing basis. On ₹1 lakh the flat EMI is ₹4,750.

What is APR on a loan?

The annual percentage rate, which includes interest and fees and works like a reducing rate. RBI regulated lenders show it in the key fact statement.
