This Kisan Vikas Patra calculator tracks a certificate that doubles your money over a set number of months, now 115, equal to 7.5% a year compounded. Enter the amount; the doubling period is filled in. It returns the final value, how long until maturity, the implied annual rate and the gain.

KVP is a post office savings certificate backed by the central government. Despite the name, anyone eligible can buy it, not only farmers.

How the Kisan Vikas Patra calculator works

The government fixes KVP's doubling period for each quarter's sales, based on the rate it sets. The maturity value is always twice the deposit. The calculator converts the doubling period into a yearly rate: (2)^(12 ÷ months) − 1. With 115 months, that is 7.5% a year compounded.

₹1,00,000 becomes ₹2,00,000 after 9 years 7 months. ₹5,00,000 becomes ₹10,00,000 in the same time. If you bought KVP in a quarter with a different period, change the months box to see the rate your certificate earns.

Doubling periodYearly rate (compounded)
115 months7.5%
120 months7.2%
124 months6.9%

As a sanity check, 72 divided by 7.5 gives 9.6 years, which is near 115 months. Every certificate keeps the doubling period that applied when it was bought.

Encashing KVP early

KVP can be cashed before maturity after 2 years and 6 months from purchase. The payout follows a table published by India Post, at a value lower than full compounding to that date would give. Earlier encashment is allowed only in special cases, such as the holder's death or a court order. KVP can also be pledged as security for a loan and transferred in some situations.

KVP vs NSC vs bank FD

KVP7.5%115 monthsNone
NSC7.7%5 yearsOld regime small savings deduction

KVP suits money you will not touch for nearly a decade and where you value a guaranteed doubling. For shorter horizons, the NSC calculator or the FD calculator fit better. All post office options are compared on the post office calculator page.

Tax on KVP

The growth on a KVP is income for tax purposes. You can declare it every year as it accrues, or all at maturity; most people find yearly declaration smoother because it avoids a big jump in income in one year. No TDS is deducted on KVP. The deposit does not qualify for any deduction. After tax at a 20% slab, a 7.5% KVP gives roughly 6% a year.

Buy KVP with PAN and KYC at any post office or at authorised banks. Rules and the premature encashment table are on India Post's site.

Who buys KVP

KVP appeals to people who want a simple promise: put in a sum now, get exactly twice that back on a known date, with a government guarantee. Families use it to park money for a child's distant milestone, such as a wedding fund, and some rural savers prefer certificates they can hold, show and pledge when they need a loan. It suits less those who might need the money within a few years, since early encashment pays less, or those in high tax slabs, since the interest is fully taxable.
