This post office RD calculator shows the maturity amount of an India Post recurring deposit, which runs for 5 years with a deposit every month. Type your monthly amount and the calculator uses the current rate of 6.7% a year, compounded every quarter, to give the maturity value and the interest.
The post office RD is one of the simplest ways to save a fixed amount each month with a government backed return. Further down: maturity tables, rules on missed deposits and loans, and a side by side with bank RDs.

How the post office RD calculator works
Each monthly deposit earns interest compounded every quarter for the months it stays in the account. The calculator adds up all 60 deposits. The Finance Ministry announces a fresh rate each quarter, yet an RD stays on its opening rate for all 5 years.
With ₹1,000 a month at 6.7%, you deposit ₹60,000 and get about ₹71,366 at maturity, so the interest is about ₹11,366. India Post's own tables may differ by a few rupees because of rounding. If you change the rate field, you can see what an account opened in a different quarter would earn.
Post office RD maturity table for 5 years
| Monthly deposit | Total deposited | Maturity at 6.7% | Interest |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹1,000 | ₹60,000 | ₹71,366 | ₹11,366 |
| ₹2,000 | ₹1,20,000 | ₹1,42,732 | ₹22,732 |
| ₹5,000 | ₹3,00,000 | ₹3,56,829 | ₹56,829 |
| ₹10,000 | ₹6,00,000 | ₹7,13,658 | ₹1,13,658 |
Every ₹1,000 a month adds about ₹71,366 at maturity at this rate, so you can scale the table to any amount. For ₹3,000 a month, multiply by three: about ₹2,14,098.
Rules of the post office recurring deposit
- Who can open: any resident adult, joint accounts for up to three adults, and a guardian for a minor. A minor aged 10 or more can open one in their own name.
- Deposit date: if the account was opened between the 1st and 15th of a month, deposit by the 15th each month; otherwise by the last working day.
- Default: a small default fee is charged per ₹100 for each missed month. After four missed deposits in a row the account is discontinued, though it can be revived within two months.
- Advance deposits: you can pay up to 5 years in advance, with a small rebate for 6 or more months paid ahead.
- Loan: after 12 deposits, a loan up to 50% of the balance is allowed at 2% above the RD rate.

Closing early or extending the post office RD
Premature closure is allowed after 3 years. If you close before 5 years, interest is paid at the post office savings account rate, currently 4.0%, not the RD rate. That is a big drop, so plan the RD for money you can leave for the full term.
At maturity you can extend the RD for another 5 years at the rate that applied when the account was first opened. Extended accounts can be closed any time, and interest for completed years is paid at the RD rate.
Post office RD vs bank RD
| Point | Post office RD | Bank RD |
|---|---|---|
| Tenure | 5 years fixed | Usually 6 months to 10 years |
| Rate | Set by government each quarter | Set by each bank |
| Safety | Government backed | DICGC cover of ₹5 lakh per bank |
| TDS | Not deducted on RD interest | Deducted above the yearly limit |
| Early closure | After 3 years, at savings rate | Usually any time, with a penalty |
For a shorter goal or a different tenure, the bank RD calculator handles 6 to 120 months. To compare every post office scheme, see the post office calculator hub.
Tax on post office RD interest
The interest is income, taxed at whatever slab you fall in. The post office does not deduct TDS on RD interest, so you must declare it yourself when you file your return. Many people report it each year on an accrual basis. At a 20% tax slab, a 6.7% RD gives about 5.4% after tax. RD deposits do not qualify for the small savings deduction; for that, look at the 5 year time deposit in the post office FD calculator or the PPF calculator.
